Meisner Technique

Sanford Meisner developed a system for actor training at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York that is now taught all over the world, championed by many actors including Jeff Goldblum, Diane Keaton, Robert Duvall, Mary Steenburgen, Don Cheadle, Alison Janney and others.

Meisner technique concentrates on behaviour, relationships and the reality of doing. It is based in the heart rather than the head and liberates actors from a need for control. Actors learn to be specific, truthful and emotionally honest.

I provide the training in 3 stages for a minimum group of 12 actors.

Stage 1 - Introductory

This first stage is essential and must not be rushed. The actor learns how to really look and really listen to their partner in Repetition Games. These repetition games teach the actor how to read and respond truthfully and specifically, in the moment, from their inner impulses.

Stage 2 - Text Classes

Meisner defined acting as: “living truthfully under imaginary circumstances”. It is only after mastery of repetition games during an independent activity, that the actor progresses to text, emotional preparation, the concept of character and ‘breaking the back of a scene’.

Stage 3 - Performance

For actors who are confident in the technique.

If you have an interested group of 12 or more actors, please contact me to arrange an Introductory Stage.
